As the war machinery was reduced in the mid-1780s, Gage's military activities declined. He supported the efforts of Loyalists to recover losses incurred when they were forced to leave the colonies, notably confirming the activities of Benjamin Church to further his widow's claims for compensation. He received visitors at Portland Place and at Firle, including Frederick Haldimand and Thomas Hutchinson. His health began to decline early in the 1780s. WebJun 17, 2015 · Thomas Gage was later given the job of mobilizing troops to repel a possible French invasion of Britain in 1781. The invasion never materialized, but Gage was given the rank of full general a year later. After an extended illness, he died in 1787. His wife Margaret survived him by 37 years but never remarried.
