WebThe Hoare family remained at Stourhead until 1946, when the property was given to the National Trust. 9 The building is now known as the Temple of Flora, a name it received at least by the 1770s. Its architect Flitcroft, however, referred to this building as the Temple of Ceres in two letters of 1744; presumably Hoare knew it by that name. Web14 Apr 2024 · The Stourhead gardens temple of Apollo was built in 1765 by Henry Flitcroft, dedicated to Apollo the sun god, the temple shows amazing views. We usually stop for a hot chocolate or a bite to eat when we’re visiting a National Trust property. Although the main design for the estate at Stourhead was the work of Colen Campbell, other architects were involved in its evolution through the years. William Benson, Henry Hoare's brother-in-law, was in part responsible for the building of the estate in 1719. Francis Cartwright, a master builder and architect, who was established as a "competent provincial designer in the Palladian manner", worked on Stourhead between 1749 and 1755.
