Shifter arm inside the tranny top was twisted and wouldn't allow the shifter plate to move properly which is why it would go to a false neutral between 4th and 3rd. $89 and a few hours work and I'm pretty sure the problem is fixed. WebAug 9, 2011 · Hi bud, it was just the shifter pawl (HD part no.34086-79) thats the small spring operated arm that lies horizontally across the shift cam and engages the cam pins to turn the cam. Small, cheap and easily overlooked but also fairly unusual, my parts supplier has never even sold a shifter pawl in nearly 40 years of business.

In 3rd gear adjust the pawl so it is centered on the shift pins. The actual adjustment is about 1/3 turn TOTAL. From about 10 oclock to 2 oclock from max upshift bias to max downshift bias.
